He later moved on to become a portrait photographer for the same newspaper. When they stopped in Singapore, Newton found that he was allowed to remain there and landed a job at the Straits Times as a photographer. Newton’s escape involved him boarding the transatlantic liner SS Conte Rosso alongside 200 other people set to sail to China. His parents left for Argentina and when Newton turned 18, he received his passport and left the very next month after his experience in the camp.
